“Hey, you’re not doing this DDoS from a Microsoft office are you?”

“Nope! No no no. Definitely coming from Iran.”

Oh no, how will I ever download Ubuntu oh wait I’ll just use the torrent like always

Who fucking cares if Ubuntu’s website is down?

perhaps the many, many people who are trying to update and secure their existing systems or install new software or packages on them? the many others wanting to upgrade or install a new ubuntu? perhaps anyone who maintains or uses a ppa archive or other launchpad resource? there are millions of people outside of your sphere that are affected by this ongoing incident.

People who want to download a torrent to download Ubuntu?

I tried to report a bug by chance and launchpad.net was down too. I thought my internet was broken.

it took over an hour and three tries to download updates to firefox and thunderbird on a system configured to use mozilla’s ppa (thunderbird is not included in mozilla’s new deb and rpm repos)

I was able to get through after a solid 20 seconds.

Its a solid down for me.

No money and they will get bored. Better to show them your backbone than your backside.

I suppose it is a very effective approach to attack a lot of IT infrastructure. Like how much CI and build systems rely on you being able to pull an ubuntu image and run some apt on it. You halt build systems, cloud deployment, and probably much more.

  1. DDoS a free and open source operating system.
  2. ????
  3. Profit.

Ubuntu has large corporate interest and is managed by a private company earning dozens of millions of dollars annually. There is a financial interest to be made here.

canonical is barely in the black–and only recently so. there isn’t anything there, except for the ‘free publicity’ that comes from doing the attack.

yeah seems like a strange target outside of maybe convenience.

Clearly they’re doing it to save people from Ubuntu. Also what’s a canonical account even for?

Now they’ve really gone too far.
