Gunzilla Games, the studio co-founded by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp and developers of NFT-infected battle royale game Off The Grid, have been accused by a number of former employees of failing to pay staff for months on end. One former animator at the studio has also accused them of attempting to “silence” workers attempting to get the money they claim to be owed.

Thoughts on Scott Pilgrim EX (ponett.dog)

by
alyaza [they/she]@beehaw.org

Scott Pilgrim EX is an interesting one. It sets out to do things a little differently than its cult classic predecessor in almost every regard. They could’ve merely gotten the band back together to do a straightforward sequel, making up for all the bugs and balance issues that arose from having to rush the first game out to release it alongside the movie. But they didn’t. Instead EX looks different, it sounds different, it’s structured differently, and the roster of playable characters is entirely different aside from the obligatory Scott and Ramona. I think this mostly works out and makes for a creatively worthwhile followup that does new things with the franchise, though there are some pacing issues that keep me from being completely crazy about it.

Revisiting the last truly great Call of Duty: Why a lot of people are playing a seven-year-old CoD again. (pcgamer.com)

by
alyaza [they/she]@beehaw.org

When I heard Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 was back in the limelight thanks to an unusually steep $6 sale on Steam, I wasn’t too surprised. Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare reboot was extremely popular in its day, reinvigorating a series that tread water through the mid-2010s and ushering in an era of followups that’d build on its reimagined progression and class systems.

I wish videogame culture would take more cues from readers (jank.cool)

by
alyaza [they/she]@beehaw.org

The book readers have it figured out. I listen to book podcasts and follow a lot of (I hate this word) bookstagrammers, and the turnover of a new year is the best time to do either of those things. This is because they’re all reviewing their reading goals for the year that was and the year to come. Did they finish the number of classics they’d hoped? Did they finish the bibliography of Ballard novels? And will next year be the year they really commit to #JanuaryInJapan, when all over the world people dedicate themselves to reading translated fiction from the country?

Picked up Dragon Quest Builders I & II in the spring sale to cope with Pokopia FOMO

by
GandalfDG@beehaw.org

Started playing builders 1 on Steam Deck and while it’s missing a bit of the visual polish of pokopia, it’s a lot of fun so far. I didn’t play it when it was new but it’s definitely scratching a build/craft/explore itch without the decision paralysis of something completely open-ended like Minecraft.

Do I have the best service for video games or no.

by
danielhanrahantng@beehaw.org

Hello my name is Daniel Hanrahan do I have the best service for video games as a developer or no? Here is what I did, I have versions of my games running natively and those versions are under the GNU GPL v3.0, That version has addon mod support and the example mods are under the BSD-3-CLAUSE license, run in fantasy computers, specifically right now the tic 80 and those versions are under the GNU GPL v3.0 with 2 conditions where the BSD-3-CLAUSE license can be used instead, and run in Game Creation Systems specifically Roblox right now where the licensing for those versions is the same as the Tic-80 versions. If anyone want the links to those games let me know and I will get them to you. When I license a game under GNU GPL v3.0 I also license it under creative commons attribution sharealike and when I license a game under BSD-3-Clause I license it under creative commons attribution because I want to make sure anything that is not covered by GNU GPL v3.0 or BSD-3-Clause is covered under an open license as well.

by
Lucy [she/faer]@piefed.blahaj.zone

There are many scenarios in this game when you might want to move between far-placed rooms. Your active items restore their charge on completing rooms. An arcade might be your source of cash that you then want to spend in a shop on the other end of the map. You want to get to the boss challenge room but the only blood donation machine is in a secret room rather far from here.

I have a love-hate relationship with MOBAs, but Deadlock—after its new Old Gods, New Blood update—has dragged me back to the genre kicking and screaming. I’ve got over 2,400 hours in Dota 2 from my misspent uni years, and I’m currently sitting on 183 hours with Valve’s latest and counting.

Video game romances need to evolve beyond lore dumps (polygon.com)

by
cm0002@toast.ooo

If you had to pick a good love story, you might think of something classic, like Jane Austen’s Emma or Casablanca. Or maybe tragic, like Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin or Romeo and Juliet. Or possibly cozy, like Heated Rivalry or Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. What probably doesn’t come to mind is a video game love story, and there’s a good reason for that. Despite the appearance of variety, video game romances only come in one type. And it hardly even counts as a romance.

A screenshot of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup of a vault on Dungeon floor 13. It's locked by crystal doors which can only be opened by the played, then there are two sets of regular doors, and behind them 16 dangerous enemies, half of them are very out of depth.
